You want the latter: "Make sure...." And note that not one alignment shop in 1000 will know to do this. If you look closely at the ball joint shaft, you will see that in addition to the 2 flats, there is a small kerf on one end, between the two flats. This kerf marks the "side" that should face forward. If you turn it 180 degrees that kerf will be facing the rear, which will be wrong. > the car rolls freely backward but as soon as I go forward, it binds up. Does it feel this way with the wheels off the ground, too? This sounds sort of like a leading shoe that is catching. I think you should double check the bearings.
