Let me try again.... ;-) There is only one sock, on the tank outlet; not on the return. The sock does not attach to anything that sticks up in the tank (there's nothing on EITHER side for it to grab on to.). Instead it is inserted from the outside, so you have to remove the alum hex fitting from the outlet nipple to get it out. I still think it sits pretty low in there, but it is certainly true that this is a real challenge for anyone's depth perception, including mine. Usually, because of the sock, you really can't see the fuel outlet opening from above, but it is possible for the bottom part of the sock to get clogged with something and keep gas from getting in once the gas fell below a certain level.
