This is a very good habit to get in to. If you track your mileage at every fillup 
you will catch a number of problems early on.

The way to do this is to write down the odometer mileage and the # of 
gallons at each fillup. The difference between the present # of miles and the 
previous # is the distance you've traveled since your last fillup, the # of 
gallons you just put in is the amount of gas that required. Then you can 
calculate the miles/gal without knowing what the tank holds.

I keep a little notebook in the glove compartment of each car. Every time I fill 
up I enter a line with:

 date / miles / <space> / gallons used / <space>

Later, when I have time, I take the difference between the miles here and the 
miles on the line above and enter that difference in the first space; that's the 
number of miles I drove on gallons I just replaced. Then I divide that mileage 
difference by the gallons used and enter the miles/gal in the last space.

This is quite accurate if you just fill up the tank every time.

Just under 11 gallons, but don't use this to estimate miles/gal. The gauge is 
a very poor measure of how many gallons you really used.
