In most cases this grease doesn't need attention, but It's still a good idea to top it up just to make sure that there is lubrication in there. I believe early beetles used oil and their steering gearboxes need to be topped up regularly. I don't think type 3s were ever lubed with anything but grease, and I would expect any good grease to work fine.
