My Dad used to do that too, but he did it for pure ecomonics back in the 60's, he just couldn't bring himself to spend more money than was absolutely required to keep the car going. We would go to the VW dealer, and they would actually sell us a half set of shoes, fully expecting another customer to come in later for the other half, or they would use the other half in the shop just on a customer's car. When I took over the car, I was even cheaper.
