One thing that most people don't realize is that the thermostatic valve inside 
the mixer box just opens the flap once the temp reaches its set point. It 
does not know whether there is actually a cool air tube connected there or 
not. So if you leave the cool air tubes off, the thermostatic valve will open and 
just let the hot air spill outside and be wasted. This also means that the 
temp inside the mixer box will not get moderated, so sometimes this 
overheats and pops the thermostat.
