You're planning a fair amount of work already. Pulling the heads is a lot of work, because you have to get all the tin off first, then you usually find that the heads are stuck to the cylinders so it is difficult to separate them without pulling at least some of the cylinders. You should clean the ring grooves before replacing rings and that is yet another can of worms, unless you have all the right tools. I'd do as little here as is really necessary, or be worried that this repair would drag out to much more than just a weekend. To remove the flywheel you need a 1-7/16" socket, a 3/4" drive, and a "cheater." You will also need a length of angle iron that you can drill to bolt to the pressure plate holes to hold the flywheel still while you remove the gland nut. You can do this with an air wrench, but you MUST NOT use the air wrench to tighten the gland nut when you're done. You need to have some way of tighening it to the correct torque range. I use my socket and drive and stand on the end, because my weight is about right. LocTite is a good idea here, too. The socket and drive alone will set you back nearly $50. - ******************************* Jim Adney, jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, Wisconsin, USA ******************************* ------------------------------------------------------------------- List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list or mailto:help@vwtype3.org
