Since I work for a filter manufacturer, I just use what we are producing
that day. I think the one that is in my '71 right now says "Cushman"
(golf cart filter) on it.  As long as it is on the suction side of the
pump, and the hose fittings are right, just use whatever you can come up
with.
As for the breather, a piece of scotchbright pad will work. It was just
in there to the oil vapors to condense and run back into the crankcase.
If you live in an area where it gets extremely cold in the winter, be
sure to keep an eye on it for freezing in the winter.
