Also keep in mind that LEDs are great for efficiency, but they are quite directional. It would take quite a few to get an illumination pattern wide enough and bright enough to replace a good incandescent bulb. For example if you've noticed the LED taillights used on modern trucks and buses they are all flat circular disks that face in just one direction and they're still populated by 20-40 individual LEDs inside.
