Short tube at the end of the cable just where it goes through the eye of the clutch arm. Looked like it was supposed to protect it from just what was happening, but I have since found out that it was not a factory tube. Guess the PO knew they had screwed up and was trying to prolong it. In my case, it was sawing thru the end of the steel tube that runs thru the body, just where it enters the flex (Bowden) tube.
