You can turn the engine in either direction to adjust the valves. If you want to 
adjust them in the order 1,2,3,4 then turn it CCW; if you want to go 1,4,3,2 
turn it CW.

Everyone has trouble with this at first. Once they figure out what the point is 
and exactly what they're trying to accomplish, it gets a LOT easier.  ;-)
