<x-charset iso-8859-1>Yes Greg, spot on, though if you're using correct parts the capacitor isn't likely to be way too high, while the coil may be shorting internally and have too low an inductance. The minus minus minus rule is if the minus point (fixed, negative one) is minus metal (pitting), the capacitor is minus value (ie shorting or too low a value). The pair make a tuned circuit that should maximise the energy transfer from battery to coil. It's like the need to match your amplifier to your speaker for maximum power transfer and lots of noise (or spark)! Dave.
