<x-charset iso-8859-1>>After a 4 mile journey today, I checked my idle mixture settings on my carbs and was a bit worried about the heat in the engine compartment. The air filter was very warm (40 odd deg C). I went and fetched my IR thermometer and checked the crankcase temp below the air cleaner and it measured 74 degC- too hot to touch. Now the ambient temperature is about 26 deg, but this seems too hot > 74C (165F) is not hot at all. The normal oil temperature range is approx. 77C-99C (170F-210F, some people say 180-210F). "Too hot" is usually considered to be 225F (107C). Of course, crankcase temp. doesn't necessarily = oil temperature but the last time I had a vehicle with an oil temperature gauge, I found it read almost the same as a reading from a meat thermometer placed directly on top of the engine. -- Everett Barnes everettb@thesamba.com http://www.thesamba.com ------------------------------------------------------------------- Search old messages on the Web!
