Have you checked for voltage at the fuel pump relay with the ignition "on"?  
There is also a fuse for the fuel pump relay..

I think this can happen to a starter motor that is overheating (like when 
you crank and crank and crank...)  You might improve the performance of the 
starter by giving it a good cleaning.
