I had to hold the throttle wide open for it to start, and then keep the rpms up to keep it alive. If I understand the way the throttle position sensor works, when you depress the pedal it sends a signal to tell the injectors to squirt extra fuel. When I would depress the pedal quickly, it would almost kill the engine. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> This is similar to the problems a lot of us with 72 have been having and exactly the problem I was having. Mine was a combination of dirty trigger points in the distributor and wrong timing. You said you set the timing to 0deg, that is the static mark, I believe. Also make sure you know which is -5, 0, 5, 7.5, I was setting it to what I thought was 0 and in reality it was -5. Muir in the Idiots guide is wrong here, he says 0 is the left most mark, but it varies by engine etc. Check on Dave's type 3 & 4 site http://www.hallvw.clara.net/type3ign.htm and match you engine code with the timing, it has pictures of the marks for each engine. Good Luck.
