<x-charset iso-8859-1>I feel your pain as I replaced a rear wheel bearing this weekend and hit similar problems with the CV bolts. I assumed the 12 splined bolts were Torx bolts but upon consulting my local nut and bolt shop they said it was in fact a '12 Spline Multi Tool' head. I tried several large tool shops to get the right tool to get them undone and the general reply was 'Rare as Rocking Horse Sh**'. I then tried a local car spares shop (a decent supplier that doesn't feel the urge to sell air fresheners and go faster stickers, rant over!) and they had the tool in stock. In the Haynes manual it notes that the 12 spline bolts can be undone with an Allen key but only if it's a good quality one and fits like a glove. For the two bolts that rounded out for me I used an angle grinder to remove the heads and then a unscrewed the threaded shaft once the CV had been separated from the axle. As a side note Torx bolts are regarded as 'Tamper Proof' so I assume the same label can be applied the 'Multi Tool' bolts (assuming someone else doesn't have the tool that fits :-) cheers, Dan '73 Fastback ---- -----Original Message----- From: Greg Merritt [mailto:gregm@vwtype3.org] Sent: Sunday, July 21, 2002 6:03 PM Subject: Re: [T3] general-knowledge question At 8:53 AM -0400 7/21/02, Iamkeen@aol.com wrote: >Thing is, I can't get my CV's undone, because 4 out of 6 bolts on each side >are completely stripped out - the holes are nearly perfectly round. >Now, I realize this condition is the result of sloppy tool use in the past - >but that's just a symptom. The root problem is, there's these whimsical Did you or a previous owner think that these were standard socket head ("Allen") screws and try to remove them with the regular tool? I believe these are usually "Torx" head screws, and need a special little tool (more of a star, rather than a hexagon) to remove. Putting the Allen key in one of the Torx bolts will strip the bolt head... -Greg ------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe, E-mail to: <type3-off@vwtype3.org> For more help, see http://vwtype3.org/list/ </x-charset>
