Years ago when my engine was hunting, I adjusted mine about 1/3 of a turn (on the advice of a long time VW mechanic) while monitoring the CO level, and got it running better without increasing the emissions, but later I readjusted it pretty much back to its original setting as it had started to run oddly, and it came back to running correctly. It seems likely that something else was wrong all the time; I can't remember if it was a leaking vacuum pipe or something else. It might have been the two-vac distributor timing done wrong as I have it on my twin-carb too, and the methods are different. If it's only the inner one that has moved, you could readjust it, but it's not something to do by ear! You need equipment (not just a screwdriver). Just because it's OK at idle doesn't mean it's OK at other speeds and throttle openings. Dave.
