I've always routed it in the normal place, but without the original sleeving. 
Most people have never seen that sleeving. I suspect that the main function 
of the sleeving was to protect the outside braid of the OE German hose from 
abrasion. The US hose comes with a separate outside skin which does the 
same thing, rendering the sleeve unnecessary. 

I've been doing it this way for 30 years, it makes for a neat job, and I haven't 
seen it give any trouble in that time. Heat seems not to be a problem; keep 
in mind that the cooling tin doesn't get particularly hot while the engine's 
running, since there is cool air blowing under it.
