The problem is that you have to replace the grease where it is needed. If you 
just wash it all out, then the parts which need to be able to move will just gall 
and seize up.

You're right, old distributors that have a lot of years on them do tend to shed 
dirt down onto the trigger points. That's one of the reasons I do a dist rebuild 
with every engine rebuild. It's the only way I know of to give the dist the same 
fresh start that the engine got.
