Interesting. I'm assuming that you just cut away the alum housing where 
necessary. I would have expected the steel stator core to stick out far 
enough that it would still be a problem. Did you cut into the laminated steel 
core?

There should be no harm from removing alum from the body, but I'm not sure 
what the effect of thinning the stator core might be.
