I have just had a look at a really lovely totally original 1966 model (first registered 24 Nov 1966) Australian-built VW 1600 TS fastback. It is truely superb, even though it has done a genuine 114,000 miles. The retired elderly couple selling it have had it since new and have kept every single document on it since then. Chassis number: 316 271 243 Engine N0: TO 156 100 Colour: Polar White These fastys were built in the VW factory at Clayton in Melbourne from CKD-kits supplied from Germany but with an Australian content of just over 50%. Many features are uniquely Australian such as the paint colour, seating materials, drum brakes at front with early-style open-centre wheels, and the "TS" designation was also unique to Australia. German-built fastys were all "TL" at the time although those destined for USA and CDN were just plain "Volkswagen" at the back and sometimes also "1600". This lovely car is for sale at AU$5,000 (about US$2,800). Unfortunately, not many people have shown much interest in it and I fear that it will sell to somebody who will fit mags and spoilers to it and ruin such pristine original car. Shipping would be about AU$1,850 (about US$1,036) from Brisbane to Los Angeles with about US$300 in fees to pay at LA. I know because I've just last month shipped a Type34 Karmann Ghia. Is anyone interested. I have no connection with the sellers. I just want to see a good car go to an appreciative home. When I looked at the car I stupidly did not have my camera with me, however, I will be going to have another look over the weekend (it is about 100 miles away) and will take pictures then. In the meantime, I could send interested people pictures of an identical car.
