To make it work without clearancing, you have to use a variety of street 
elbows. Berg only supplies one style.

Really? I'm trying to imagine how the pump would keep the driveshaft from 
coming out, and yet still allow the dist to fit in place. I don't see how this 
could be....

.010" sounds a bit thin even for a bearing, but perhaps it got beat down to 
that. Do you plan to do a post mortem soon? If so, let us know what you find.

Yes and yes.

Could be the seal if the flywheel was dry and it burned the seal before the oil 
got to it on the first startup. I always put some oil or grease on the nose of 
the flywheel when installing it, so that there is lubrication there right from the 
start. The leak could also be the cam tunnel plug, which would be much 
worse news.
