The AC was a DPD installed when car was new. The AC belt has a different grove than standard used today. Peter I presume that you are speaking of a long belt that goes between the compressor and generator. That's not a good situation, because mine wouldn't last more than about 50 miles before it broke. The way I got around it was to use a second pulley and belt that did not care whether the air conditioner was working or not. One belt went between the crankshaft and the generator. The other went from the compressor to the crank. The two belt system was the only one that worked for me. The single belt never lasted more than about 50 miles, it broke, the engine quit genning and the air conditioning quit working. Unfortunately, those two belt systems are as scarce as hen's teeth, and my two of them are both being used on my own engines. Advertise under www.oroad.com/volkswebbin or www.thesamba.com. You might find one. It looks like a long rachet extension to the end of the crank. That was VW's original solution to the problem.
