U engines started out as FI engines, as did all type 3 engines delivered into 
the US 68-73.

The distributor drive gear should be installed in a different position in a type 3 
engine than in a beetle. Yours may have been installed by someone who 
knew beetles only. You could remove it and put it in right, but there is some 
hazard of dropping washers down into the case, which could require 
disassembly of the engine to get them out.

Either leave it where it is, until you do a rebuild, or work very carefully.
