From the symptoms you describe, your charging system is at fault. VW's in general, produce fairly low voltage and amperage at idle and your weak battery is likely compounding the problem. If your charging system checks out OK, I would put your batery on trickle charge for several hours or possibly overnight and that should bring things back up to par. The stock charging system takes quite a long time to fully recharge a dead battery especially at running speeds produced just from cruising around town.
