I wouldn't align bore a case that had been harshly used and then expect it to hold up to racing conditions. But I don't mind doing this to a gently used street engine that will then go back out on the street. One thing that Berg doesn't mention is worn out lifter bores; if these are shot, RIMCO can sleeve them, but this is expensive and probably a sign that the case should be recycled. I don't know if you can still get new "universal" cases, but VW used to have 3 versions: a 40 HP version, a 1500/1600 type 1,2,3 version, and a 1500/1600 AT type 3 version. The universal cases came with all the openings that each engine type needed. plus a set of covers to stop off the openings you might not need. It seems likely that the Mexican cases would only be for the type 1 engines and would lack the oil filler pipe opening. OTOH, I have a good supply of good used type 3 cases. All my rebuilds have been on cases just like these, and I get better than stock mileage out of them, largely because I always put in a counterweighted crank and a full flow oil filter. - Jim Adney jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, WI 53711-3054 USA ------------------------------------------------------------------- List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list or mailto:help@vwtype3.org
