Sounds to me like you were faced with an MT engine that had previously 
been swapped in by someone who didn't know to make this mod to the case 
first. Yes, I imagine that it COULD be done, but like you say, it would be a 
royal PITA.

I've modified an MT engine in the past in order to do this, and you really don't 
need to remove as much material as the factory did, but it sure helps to be 
able to use a normal wrench in there.  ;-)
