Given that and the fact that the firing order is 1432, your cap should look like: 4 3 1 2 This is because you probably have the wrong distributor in there. You didn't give the whole VW number, but a type 3 distributor will start with 311 905 .... I think if you put in the right dist, you will find that the cap needs to be wired correctly for a type 3: 3 2 4 1 I'd do this first, just to get yourself on the right track.
