<x-charset iso-8859-1>Robb, Have you checked if your plug wires are on the right spot ? I had this problem a week ago when I first tried to turn on my new rebuild . I tried for hours but then I remembered that for every 4 stroke cycle, the timing marks go around twice. You must place cylinder # 1 at top dead center and make sure the piston is all the way to the top using a screw driver in the plug hole. Make sure the both valves on cylinder number one are closed by physically looking under the valve cover. If the engine is in the correct position, set your dist rotor base and cap at a position. I do not say #1 on the dist because it is not labled, any place can be number one on the dist cap if the dizzy gear was installed funky. I have installed distributor gear wrong in other non VW cars and I would choose the pole on the dist that could be used as cylinder # 1. After setting this "static" timing then you can put the other wires in the direction and according to the engine's timing. This can be done when a distributor drive is installed incorrectly. It is best that the gear be installed right the first time, some of you people can relate . Does your other wires shoot sparks out the plug side, did you check each one ? Make sure your points open and close correctly, clean, good dwell etc...
