and just keep in mind that "how to hot rod VW engines"
is a tad dated but most of the stuff in there works.

you might check out VW Trends they just started a
series of articles this month on a budget engine
buildup.  theirs is a 1915 but pretty much anything on
that engine could be carried over to a 1776 which
would work better in a type 3.

to start make sure your engine is running its best and
that everything is in good shape and set properly. 
then if thats not fast enough consider a buildup.
