"Part of the job of the heat exchangers is to "remove heat" away from the engine, not just to remove the exhaust fumes." .......I was always under the assumption the heat exchangers' job was to "rob" heat from the exhaust flow to heat the car. "Since J-Tubes are less dense, thinner, and use metal compounds that conduct heat faster than do the heat exchangers, it is certain that you will increase the temperature below your cylinders." ..............The outer "jacket" or "heat sink" on VW heat exchangers is made from aluminum, which conducts heat FAR faster that steel. My j-tubes will be either ceramic coated, which greatly reduces the heat they give off, or coated with POR-20 and wrapped in fiberglass "header wrap". "Not to mention, the heat exchangers on a T3 are wrapped with a heatshield mesh, so by using J-tubes, you are also sacrificing this heat-protecting mesh." ..........This "insulation", if i'm correct, is more for the purpose of keeping the heat IN so it heats the car more efficiently. The same reason the OEM tubes that run from the exchangers to the body are wrapped in it as well. I do very much agree with you, however, that it would protect the heads from excess heat...that's why I plan on ceramic coating or fiberglass wrap. "If the bottom of the cylinders is protected by the larger cooling tin (as opposed to the smaller design found on earlier type 1's), this may not be as much of a problem." ............. I'm running factory "super cool" tins on my Fastback because of the hot climate here. "But regardless of cooling tins used, cylinder #3 is going to run even hotter, running a greater risk of cooking your engine." ......I was always under the impression that heat exchangers made #3 and # 1 run hotter than #2 and #4 due to that fact that exchangers are a "heat generator" ,not allowing the exhaust heat to travel out the muffler, but retaining it in one area. Also they are more restrictive than the larger I.D. j-tubes, causing more of a heat retention problem. I really enjoy hearing all the different opinions. It helps make more informed decisions.
