Before Christmas there was discussion about some Type36 Variants being designated as the "Variant E" in Canada and some other countries. Today, while looking through both the official ETKA VW CD-ROM parts manual and the old hard copy edition, I came across the following entry:- "Part No. 361 853 677 Name "E" from Chassis No. 221 975 up to 315 220 883 Type and model: M 3, 361-364 " This tells us that it was part of VW Option M 3 which was a single carburettor motor instead of the twin-carburettor motor for squareback models 361 to 364 from 01August1963 to 31July1965 (1964 and 1965 model years). Thus, if the car was supposed to have twin-carburettors and VW Option M3 was specified, then the letter 'E' was used on the rear hatch. So, the "Variant E" script was not unique to Canada.
