Re: [T3] 1963 Squareback purchased

Allyn,

Thanks for you comments. I myself have criticisms of the
book as well. For example, I would like to have seen the
pictures bigger and more closely aligned to the text.

I am also now aware of some "typos" which gremlins always
seem to put in books despite the author's and the publisher's
best efforts. I have also learned a lot more about the Brazilian-
made VWs (especially the air-cooled ones) since publication.
And, this information (especially on Type3s) has come from
VW enthusiasts in Brazil.

My VW 411 is a 1969 model which was the first model year of
Type4 production. I believe that the first model year sold in
the USA was the 1971 model and US Type4s always had only
automatic transmission available (except for the 2-door in 1973
and 1974). In the rest of the world I believe manual transmission
was standard with automatic transmission specified in about
30-40% of new vehicle purchases. And, in some markets (e.g.
developing countries like Nigeria, Zambia and PapuaNewGuinea)
automatic transmission was not available.

My 1969 VW 411 was sold new in PapuaNewGuinea and privately
brought to Australia in about 1987. VW Type4s were never marketed
in Australia.
