I think the plain black wire is a ground; verify this with your Ohmmeter. Some of the Sapphire radios have an extra wire for the lamp, while others don't. This sounds like this one doesn't, but I thought all the early ones did. If your extra black wire is not a ground, then it is probably the lamp, and you need to add a ground. > Also the speaker I have hooked up is one I had laying around. It is rated > at 50W. If so, it means that you don't have a good ground thru the antenna shield, which indicates a problem somewhere along that line. It should be well grounded to the fender where it is mounted.
