Not knowing that radio intimately, I would imagine that IS the power for the
backlight, but it should be hooked into the gauge lighting so it is only on
when the driving/head lights are on.

Yep, use a lower power speaker (most good speakers have a _minimum_ power
rating), but you are likely to get better results from using a speaker with
the proper (lower) impedance.  Your 50W speaker is most likely 8 Ohms and I
believe the factory speakers were less, like 4 or 6 Ohms.  But don't just
throw any old one in there, too small of an impedance will act like a short
to your radio's amplifier.

Maybe someone else can provide specifics, but that should get you started.
