Yep, use a lower power speaker (most good speakers have a _minimum_ power rating), but you are likely to get better results from using a speaker with the proper (lower) impedance. Your 50W speaker is most likely 8 Ohms and I believe the factory speakers were less, like 4 or 6 Ohms. But don't just throw any old one in there, too small of an impedance will act like a short to your radio's amplifier. Maybe someone else can provide specifics, but that should get you started.
