<x-charset iso-8859-1> When I restored my 1960 Beetle in 1994/5, I did come across a flat lobe on the cam for cylinder 2. The motor had 71,505 miles on it, was definitely original in mileage and to the car. It was possible to see some of the discoloration of the metal on the flattening lobe, and whether this was a function of the "hardening" process or from excessive heat build up, I'm not sure. I am sure that excessive heat is a bad thing for any VW motor and the cam gear, if sized improperly, can generate an incredible amount of heat. Another theory I possess is that of too tight valves and springs...if there is too heavy spring pressure, that would (hypothetically at least) increase the load pressure of the lifter as it rides on the cam, possibly leading to premature wear of the cam lobe. Any ideas Shad? Note that I only recommend this with an OEM stock cam. Perhaps I should add that all my engines have full flow oil filters, so this may have something to do with reduced cam wear. I often take a cam with 100,000 miles on it or so, and put it back in an engine that will go another 100,000 miles. I look at them hard before I do this, but they haven't let me down yet. Is there anyone on our list here who has actually had a cam go flat on them? If so, what kind of cam was it? VW or aftermarket, stock or performance, how old? BTW, I agree on the lifters. There are really BAD lifters out there, including some particularly bad examples made in Germany, so you have to be pretty careful about what you buy, or buy from someone you KNOW you can trust. - Jim Adney jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, WI 53711-3054 USA ------------------------------------------------------------------- List info at http://www.vwtype3.org/list or mailto:help@vwtype3.org </x-charset>
