When you turn the heat off, it is still a good idea to keep the heat exchanger "cool" by running air thru it. Note that it still has considerable resistance to airflow. If you remove the heat exchangers you no longer have anything to cool, and dumping air off the sides of the fan housing would be quite a waste.
