The internal pipes make them about the > same as the length of the heater boxes. This is only true of the GOOD German mufflers. Some were made this way, some the easy way. You can tell the difference on a bare muffler by sticking your finger down one of the upper inlet pipes and seeing if it turns a corner or just ends at the muffler shell. Most of them that I see are not the good ones. BTW, I've never seen a non-German type 3 muffler. I'm told that they exist, but all the ones I've seen were made in Germany. Some have stickers that say otherwise, but once you peel the stickers off I find a German stamp on the body of the muffler.
