The brass had to come off one of the contact points inside the cap. Look in there and see what has worn. A Bosch cap should have a carbon brush in the center position, which should last forever. The terminals on the sides should not even touch. There should not be wear particles here. I'd be concerned that they'd short something out. > My inclination is to go back to the old rotor, as the new one didn't > actually improve anything, but why would it do that? > > Also, I have a junk distributor in my parts box, from which I removed > the points and capacitor, both of which look to be in better shape > that the ones installed in the car. Ignore cosmetic problems; they last forever. > I am also looking at the option of electronic ignition; does anyone > have any experience of the Empi Accu-fire system? Most of the electronic systems work fine, until they die. Most of them die eventually. I personally love the CDI units, but others prefer other brands. None of them give better performance, but then do reduce maintenance. - Jim Adney Madison, WI USA ------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe, E-mail to: <type3-off@vwtype3.org> For more help, see http://vwtype3.org/list/
