You should be able to set the timing and at least get it to idle properly with ANY distributor. This does not sound like a distributor problem. Replacing the distributor now will just cost you extra money and muddy the diagnostic waters. Check the fuel supply. Is there gas getting to the pump? Is there gas getting to the carbs?
