I had this sort of problem with my Fastback. I had just put the carbs back on the car after rebuilding them, and it just wouldn't idle no matter what adjustments I made. In the end I found that the needle valve in the right carb wasn't letting any fuel in. I put the originals back in and it fired straight up. I would try to fix the original distributor, if you can find a new vac. can for it, but lack of vacuum advance probably wouldn't cause it to not start up.
