This is just how I have found all of my VWs after I get them.  I once
cleaned up the front axel of a Fastback I had with mineral spirits.  But now
I don't think this was a good idea.  The ribber seals in that axel are wide
open to damage from solvents you may use around there.  I'd just pick away
at it like you're doing with the scraper (I use pieces of wood) and rags.
You should have to do it only once if you get under there regularly from now
on.
