[T3] Parma report: Greg and Emily's day 1

<x-flowed>

It's getting fuzzy already, but here's how I remember our first day of travel.

I started off all packed up on the morning of Thursday 8/15, and hit the road for... work.

I parked in a city lot in downtown Berkeley. When I went to get the car after work, there was a '66 or '67 Fasty parked next to me. Cooool.

I picked up Emily after her day camp at the university's botanical gardens, and we hit highway 80 in Berkeley, California around 4:30 or so. Progress was slow due to traffic, but we moved fairly steadily. (I don't know how people can sit in their cars and do that whole "traffic" thing every day... what a raw deal.)

We made it to the Sacramento meeting place at just about 7pm. Hal had made it there from Santa Rosa. (I'll let Hal tell about his fun with his brakes and fuel system.) Kris wasn't able to join the caravan all the way to Parma, but he stopped by with a friend to come and say hello.

We hung out for a bit in Sacto, gassed up, and headed out of town.

We pulled off at a rest stop a ways down the road, and were jazzed to see a bright orange Squareback and a nice red Notch. Woo-hoo! Raul (the square) and Dave and Dolores(?) had been driving all day from socal, and everyone was pleased to double the size of their respective caravans from 2 cars to 4. We were all a bit bummed that the whole California swarm had dwindled to just our four cars, but we were all psyched to be going to Parma. (I call it "feeling Parmish", but that's just me.)

I believe that our next break was at the Donner Pass rest stop after a good deal of climbing. (Good thing we weren't hungry... get it? get it? Donner Pass? heh.) A bit chilly up there!

Stretched our legs, drained fluids... but then Dave's Notch was a bit cranky and didn't want to fire up. A little fiddling and a little patience had us back on the road again. Probably just didn't like being hot after the climb and trying to start at altitude. Also, Hal's frankensteined injection system proved to be a bit cranky when starting warm... at least it proved to be "predictable" in that regard through the next day, too.

We'd agreed to stop in Reno to get something to eat, and probably find a place to stay for the night. Raul, leading, pulled us off the highway in downtown Reno. It was well after 11pm at this point. We hit a Texaco near the exit, and decided we'd crash for the night at the casino hotels and meet the next morning at... 8:00, I believe.

Circus Circus only had suites available at $toomuch/night, so Hal, Raul, Emily and I decided to split one of these big rooms. After check-in, parking, schlepping stuff across the tram (so lame) and up to the 23rd floor, it was pushing 1:30am or so by the time we were getting to sleep. Ugh, long day. Not being the gambling type, 8 hours was about 7:55 longer than I needed to stay at Circus Circus, but it made for a comfortable place to rest up for the next day.
