Success at last, to some degree. I received a package of used injectors from a parts score in TN. Out of 8 injectors I got three that didn't leak when under regular pressure (5 primes with just fuel pump) and sprayed gas when attmpting to start, without dripping thereafter. I inserted each injector on cyl 1 trigger leads, and caught the gas in aa plastic bag to check them. None of the injectors (one is NOS) continued to drip gas. Engine fired right up, and immediately smoked white at all speeds. Response to throttle producued lots of white smoke, no blue black or grey, just constant white. The3 used injectors were not VW, they are RAM brand, but identical and marked in yeloow. All the old VW ones were stuck closed like my looking perfect, but seized originals. I must go through the valves again, but am slightly confused (easily accomplished) about this rich running condition. I would assume an injector is sticking, but I am uncertain this is the case, and likely to doubt it, since the injectors seemed well individually tested. Voltages at the relays checked out ok. I wonder now: A) do I disconnect the injector connectors until I get no smoke (in order to check for one sticking, but it may be stuck slightly open without triggering (this is the condition I am doubting). B) could it be a bad spark plug wire (they are OE), and cyl #3 plug end was broken off it, I rescrewed the end at plug onto the wire. C) is this the pressure sensor? Would it run at all then? D) never could get hot due to mixture, and I shut her down after 3-5 minutes at most. So is cold start to blame? Can I get too much gas there? It a 72 with cold start intact. E) aux air reg is sucking air, I checked at air cleaner. F) I understand this could be a voltage problem at the v. regulator as well? I don't understand this concept fully however. I am happy to hear then engine run finally, but am concerned about this snag I hit.
