Bingo! This is exactly what tipped me off, the thumb notch on the filler cap.


Interestingly, it only had "automatic" on the right side of the decklid -- nothing on the left. My '69 has a metal bar below and a (missing) "Volkswagen" above, both on the left. This '68 didn't even have the holes for the vw script and bar. Then again, they could have been filled -- the car was resprayed.
