Thanks for the advice Jim- It turned out that the engine wasn't necessarily the 30000 miler I had thought it was. According to my books, the engine in a 72 auto fastback should have an X code. Mine is a U code, meaning that there is a possibility that something major has happened (as long as the books I'm reading are correct!)in this car's past. I hadn't bothered to check this. As you know, the 'U' engine should be set up with 0 degrees advance whereas the X is 5 or 7.5 degrees (can't remember which)so a simple switch to a right hand condenser meant that I could adjust it so that the timing was sorted without having to do the usual fiddly stuff. Another interesting point is that once this was adjusted, it turned out that the idle was actually set too low and once I had adjusted it to 850rpm the idle on the car was virtually perfect. You are probably right about the fuel tank though - Fortunately I have a good spare.. Sorry, this SHOULD have read: Extreme hunting at idle in a FI type 3 indicates that certain parts of the FI are working properly, but that your idle is set too high. - ******************************* Jim Adney, jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, Wisconsin, USA ******************************* ------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe, E-mail to: <type3-off@vwtype3.org> For more help, see http://vwtype3.org/list/ ------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe, E-mail to: <type3-off@vwtype3.org> For more help, see http://vwtype3.org/list/
