You're right, with great effort you can make it work almost as well as the 
"flat" engine, but most people who try this come from the beetle community 
and don't have any idea of the trouble they're getting themselves into.

Besides, what would be the point? Here are your choices:

!) build an upright engine and install it. discard the rear trunk and build a 
custom cooling duct system that is very difficult to make, impossible to 
make durable, and works not quite as well as a stock type 3 system.

2) build a type 3 engine and install it. spend all the time and money you 
would have wasted on the upright ducting to do a better job on the engine. 
End up with something that will last.

Seems like a bit of a no-brainer to me....
