<x-charset iso-8859-1>You know, I figured this older motor would be pretty basic to get running, but its making a monkey out of me... Went over to work on the Fastback today, and following the advise of several people on the list, I went to confirm that I have the timing right. I pulled the right rocker cover, and rotated the motor until the timing marks on the case and the fan lined up, then confirmed that both the intake and exhaust valves were closed. When I popped the distributor cap, I saw that in fact the mark on the Beetle distributor is incorrect, and that the rotor was pointing toward the back of the motor, specifically at one of the bolts for the fan housing. Once I confirmed that one of the distributor cap terminals pointed in that general direction, I moved the #1 plug wire there, then moved the rest around accordingly. To confirm this, please refer to www.jamesaltemus.com, I numbered the photo to show what I did. Since I determined that the fuel pump I installed is bad, I've been trying to run the car off a coffee can configuration I rigged up. I'm not looking to drive the car at this point, I just want to determine that the motor isn't a big chunk of slag. Trying ot be even more basic, I dribbled a little gas into the throat of each carb, and snapped the throttle to get the gas down into the manifold. We then cranked the motor. What we got was puffing out of the carbs and nothing else. I rotated the distributor back and forth a couple times, and that changed the sound of the cranking motor, but I still got nothing more than puffing. I grabbed my timing light and checked to make sure I was getting spark, and at the right time. Unfortunately, although I was able to get a signal from the timing light (and therefore confirming that I was getting spark) the motor wasn't turning fast enough to confirm that I was getting spark at the right time. I have another fuel pump I am going to try tomorrow, with the hope that I can get enough fuel pressure to get the bowls to fill on the carb. In the mean time, are there any suggestions on what I might try? The puffing out of the carbs is whats really getting me, since that tells me the timing still isn't correct.
