I recommend getting this done correctly, too, but it's important to understand the hazards. In order to turn the drive gear, you have to lift it more than enough to free the washers. If the washers fall into the case you will probably have to take the engine COMPLETELY APART to get them out. I have never found a magnet strong enough to lift the drive gear. I use an expanding snap ring pliers which allows me to grip the inside of the drive slot. It's important that you know exactly what you are doing here, because you don't want to take any more risks than necessary, but I always remove the drive gear all the way so that I can verify that the thrust washers have not fallen into the case. Use a thin rod to slide them up or down the bore so that they can't possibly get anywhere unintended. I've had to do this a number of times on other people's engines. I have never had a problem, but it always makes me nervous; the stakes are just too high. - ******************************* Jim Adney, jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, Wisconsin, USA ******************************* ------------------------------------------------------------------- Search old messages on the Web!
