It happens to them all as they get old.  I reckon the reason is connected to
the expansion of the starter armature with the warmth on the journey then
contraction again as cooling  takes place.  This leaves the brushes making
less than perfect contact with the armature, and consequently not enough
current through the solenoid circuit (which includes the motor armature to
inch the motor round for smooth pre-engagement).  It does seem related to
deep heat factors, and is cured for some considerable time by cleaning the
armature and brush holders, and lubricating the shaft the moving gear slides
on.  Greater tension from new brushes also helps.
